Stefan is a software engineer specializing in setup technologies. He has been awared as an MVP for the Windows Installer (MSI) technology. Stefan lives in the southern part of Germany, in a village near Wuerzburg. He was born in 1962 and went to school in Wuerzburg. After civil service he went to Darmstadt to study electrical engineering and become a Dipl.-Ing. (graduate engineer). From 1991 until 1998 he was employed as a software and firmware developer in a company that creates medical devices for neurological diagnostics. Since 1994 one of his tasks was to build the setup programs for the company’s software. Starting with the setup toolkit from the Windows SDK, he soon switched to InstallShield products (Professional 3 and above, later moving focus to the new MSI technology). In 1997 Stefan started the InstallSite.org web site as a repository to collect code samples and tips and share them with other users. As a consequence, companies approached him to request assistance and consulting for their setup programs. He did that as a freelancer, first on a part time basis. In 1999 he left the company and became self-employed, working as a setup consultant for customers around the world. Stefan is married and has three children. His self-employed status enables him to spend time with them by day, although that means he often has to work late in the evening. In his spare time he’s engaged in a church community and is volunteering at the Red Cross as a paramedic.
