After working closely with Microsoft’s Windows Phone team for six years—working on major launch campaigns and integration in events such as the Mobile World Congress—Desiree Lockwood took over as a senior product marketing manager for Windows Phone just three months ago. One of her first realizations? The tremendous reach and impact of the MVP community.
“There are just 35 Windows Phone Development MVPs and together they reached three million people last year,” explained Desiree. “It’s not just amazing reach though; it’s depth. They help drive awareness of what this platform can do and truly enhance people’s experience with it around the world, every day.”
“This is one of my favorite things about this job,” she continued. “I love being able to speak with people who are passionate about technology--the same technology I’m passionate about. And then you see what they’re accomplishing out in the community and it’s humbling: they’re coming to me with full plans for spreading the word out in their region or helping the product teams better communicate features. It motivates me every day. I see part of my job as just helping to unblock their paths and enable them.”
That relationship with Windows Phone Development MVPs extends to the product engineering team, who make sure there are seats for MVPs in nearly every product review cycle. “The engineering team feels very comfortable sharing early information with the Windows Phone Development MVP community. They know MVPs have the pulse of the community and are out in the trenches, helping developers get from point a to point b every day,” said Desiree.
“Members of our team are coming to me every few weeks saying: ‘I have this project I’m working on, can I talk with some MVPs?’” she explained. “And MVPs love that—if it’s new and nobody’s done it before, then they’re enthusiastic: ‘Yes, sign me up!’”
So far the highlight of her work with community has been the recent MVP Global Summit. “I have calls with MVPs every other week and it’s always enjoyable; there’s a definite sense of camaraderie. But getting to sit down face-to-face at the Summit with the people I’ve been exchanging instant messages with was one of my favorite moments.”
